Does pain increase delirium risk in people with dementia during a hospital admission?

In the United Kingdom around 3.2 million hospital bed days a year are occupied by people with dementia1, who are also six times more likely to be admitted with a delirium which often goes undetected2. Delirium is distressing for the person with dementia and their family1, and independently predicts worse outcomes such as higher mortality, increased length of stay, and increased institutionalisation3.
