Set up in 1988, the Medicine Optimisation (formerly Drugs & Prescribing) Special Interest Group was the first of the British Geriatrics Society's special interest groups. Its brief is to bring together those interested in practice and research in the field of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics of ageing. Over the years this has included pharmacists, nurses, pharmacologists, clinical pharmacologists, pharmaceutical physicians and social gerontologists.
