Miles Witham is Professor of Trials for Older People in the AGE Research Group at Newcastle University. He is co-lead for the Ageing, Sarcopenia and Multimorbidity Theme, NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre, theme lead for Ageing and Long-Term Conditions, NIHR Newcastle MIC, and honorary Consultant Geriatrician at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust where he works as a community geriatrician.
His research focusses on ageing, sarcopenia and multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) using both clinical trials and routinely-collected health and social care data. He co-leads the UKRI-funded ART of Healthy Ageing Network for translational ageing research, leads work on pathways of hospital care in the UKRI-funded ADMISSION Research Collaborative, and is workstream co-lead in the cross-NIHR Collaboration on MLTC.
Prior to his move to Newcastle in 2018, he was based at the University of Dundee, starting as a clinical research fellow in 2001 before becoming a Clinical Lecturer, CSO Clinician Scientist, and taking up a senior lecturer and consultant post in 2009. He was National Speciality Lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network Ageing speciality (2019-2022), co-director of the Tayside Clinical Trials Unit (2015-2018) and deputy Editor of Age and Ageing (2015-2020). He served on the Chief Medical Officers Urgent Public Health prioritisation Committee during the COVID pandemic and has a longstanding interest in improving inclusion of under-served groups in clinical research.
