Dr Patricia McCaffrey is a Consultant Geriatrician and Divisional Medical Director for Older People Services in the Southern Trust, Northern Ireland. She was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the King’s Birthday Honours List in June in recognition of her services to older people.
I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been awarded an MBE for my work in geriatric medicine. This recognition holds profound significance for me, both personally and professionally, as I reflect on my career dedicated to improving the care of older people.
Geriatric medicine is a field that becomes increasingly vital as our population ages, yet is often underappreciated. Receiving an MBE feels like recognition not just of my work, but of the importance of advocating for older adults. Our goal is to ensure they live their later years with dignity, respect and access to the best possible care.
This award also highlights the collective efforts of the incredible healthcare professionals I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. This recognition belongs to all of us who strive to improve the lives of older adults every day.
On a personal level, the MBE is a powerful reminder of why I chose geriatric medicine. My journey began with a deep respect for older people, whose lives are filled with wisdom and stories that deserve to be heard. I wanted to be an advocate for them, ensuring they receive the care and attention they need to live their later years fully and comfortably.
Throughout my career, I’ve remained committed to developing strong community care models for older people. I strongly believe that by strengthening community-based care, we can improve the quality of life for older adults, enabling them to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.
While this award is a wonderful milestone, it also reminds me that there is still much work to be done. There are ongoing challenges in addressing the inequalities older people face, particularly in access to healthcare and social support.
I also hope my success encourages more healthcare professionals to consider a career in geriatric medicine. It is a field that is challenging yet immensely rewarding, and there is no greater privilege than caring for those who have spent their lives caring for others.
Finally, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me throughout my career—my family, colleagues, patients, and the community. This MBE is not just mine; it belongs to all of us who believe in the importance of caring for our older population. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference.
