Find out when the deadline for submission is, and in what format you should submit the abstract (paper, disk or online). Look at previously published abstracts from the meeting to gauge the style; there are usually notes on format available (e.g. on the meeting website) that you should read.
\r\n \t
\r\n \tCommon problems to avoid are:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Failing to read the instructions. Failing to follow the instructions is a good way of getting your abstract rejected.
\r\n \t
Stick to the word limit. The body of the abstract may have a separate word limit from the title and authors names.
\r\n \t
Don't try and present too much data (although you must include some). Abstracts are short, and seem to be getting shorter!
\r\n \t
Pick one simple message to get across and no more. If the data in your abstract doesn't help get the message across, leave it out.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
Poster presentations
\r\n \r\n
Making the poster:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Plan your poster several weeks in advance. This gives enough time for it to be printed.
\r\n \t
Make sure what is on the poster matches the abstract; the best approach is to start with the text of your abstract and expand; put in some more introduction, more detailed methods. Keep the conclusion the same as in your abstract.
\r\n \t
Make the writing big - it should be visible from at least 1.5m away.
\r\n \t
Find out whether portrait or landscape format is required and what size it should be.
\r\n \t
Ask your local University media dept or NHS medical media dept how to get the poster printed. They will usually have preset formats and styles for producing posters; you can often just concentrate on the text and tables. Pictures are fine, but they are not a substitute for interesting data.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
At the meeting:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Take drawing pins and Velcro - they may be provided, but it is best to be on the safe side
\r\n \t
Put the poster in a plastic tube and carry it as hand luggage. It doesn't really matter if your suitcase is lost, but it does matter if your poster is lost.
\r\n \t
Think about the questions that you will be asked by interested parties and prepare some answers. Get a colleague to look over the poster critically
\r\n \t
Find out when the poster should be in place by, when you may take it down, and when the judging (if any) occurs)
\r\n \t
Be next to your poster whenever you can; the more people you can talk to about your work, the more rewarding you will find the experience.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
Oral presentations
\r\n \r\n
General points:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Presenting is about communicating a set of ideas from your brain to the brains of others. If you don't manage to do this, your presentation has failed.
\r\n \t
To communicate effectively you need to know your audience. Is this an audience mainly of clinicians who will be looking for the clinically relevant points? Or is it a more specialist audience who need to know more about, say, your methods?
\r\n \t
Always tailor your presentation to the needs and interests of each audience. A 20 minute talk to your workmates cannot be effectively delivered to the BGS conference in 10 minutes. Make every presentation fit the purpose.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
Making your slide presentation:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Always remember that the purpose of your slide presentation is to augment your talk, not to distract from it. You and what you say should be the focus of attention for the audience.
\r\n \t
Blue background, yellow writing. This is easiest to see, and works in low or high light levels.
\r\n \t
Avoid animation. It is distracting and rarely adds anything to a presentation.
\r\n \t
Don't use videos unless you really know what you are doing. They usually go wrong, which interrupts your presentation.
\r\n \t
Keep to a maximum of six pieces of information per slide. Large tables should always be avoided - no-one has the time to read them even if the numbers are visible. If you have to apologise for a 'busy' slide, it shouldn't be in there. Simplify it!
\r\n \t
Lay out your talk in the same way as your abstract.
\r\n \t
Do not spend a long time thanking everyone in the lab, all of your mentors etc. It is not Oscar night. Put it on one slide and thank the funding body.
\r\n \t
Short talks (up to 10 minutes) can use a maximum of two slides per minute, though one is better. The longer the talk, the less slides per minute you should attempt to show. Talks above 45 minutes should not be allowed; no-one in the audience can concentrate on a talk for longer than about 40 mins.
\r\n \t
The ideal speed for speaking is about 100 words per minute. A simple rule is - 1 slide per minute, with 100 spoken words per slide.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
Giving your talk
\r\n \r\n
The key to success is preparation. Good preparation effectively curtails nerves, helps you get the message across clearly, and makes you look good. Excellent speakers invest at least one hour of practice per minute of their talk. Certainly you should have practised the talk at least 10 times before. And practising means delivering the talk exactly as you want it to be delivered on the day. Glancing through your slides is not enough. It is nerve-wracking and sometimes painful, but practising to colleagues, particularly senior ones, is extremely valuable. Even worse, you can record yourself on tape - most people are shocked by how many 'umms' and 'ahhs' they emit during a talk. However, hearing yourself on tape really helps to you correct things in advance.
\r\n \t
\r\n \tTiming is crucial. Most people go on for far too long, a few are very nervous and rush through. A minute too short is better than 30 seconds too long - you will keep the chairperson happy, the audience will love you.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
Prepare for questions. Many can be anticipated. Force people to ask you hard questions - once you've answered them in practice, it's a lot easier to answer them at the meeting.
\r\n \t
Dress soberly and smartly. Your talk, not your clothes should be the topic of conversation.
\r\n \t
Express confidence through your body language. You shouldn't have anything to hide.
\r\n \t
Speak up - but avoid getting too close (within six inches) to the microphone.
\r\n \t
When you have finished, shut up. Don't waffle on after you have delivered your main message.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
Some people prefer to read from a pre-prepared text, others prefer to use reminder cards with key points, still others prefer to ad-lib using slides as a prompt. You will need to experiment to see which technique works best for you, but if you are inexperienced at public speaking, I would strongly recommend that you use one of the first two methods. The shorter the talk, the more important every word becomes, and the more carefully you should plan what you will say. A tip - good speakers often memorise the first 90 seconds of their talk. This is not hard to do and is great for relieving nerves and creating the impression of competence and authority.
\r\n \t
\r\n \tDo not read what is on the slide verbatim. The audience are quite capable of doing this for themselves, it wastes valuable time and it is very boring.
\r\n \t
\r\n \tOn the day, make sure that:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n \t
You know where and when you are due to present. Get there in plenty of time - preferably the day before.
\r\n \t
Your talk is loaded onto the computer well before you are due to present, and make sure that you know how the equipment works - especially how to go back a slide! Check the presentation to make sure that the colours or presentation size are the same as they were on your computer at work.
\r\n \t
If you don't understand the question someone asks, say so. Many questions at scientific meetings are irrelevant or incomprehensible (some are statements, rather than questions).
\r\n \t
If you don't know the answer to the question, say so. Do not try and waffle - no-one is impressed and it wastes everyone's time. The whole purpose of scientific meetings is to exchange information. People ask questions to clarify ideas in their mind and to get more information. It is not a school test. No-one has ever done a perfect study. Your study is bound to have weaknesses and problems, so don't be afraid to acknowledge them.
\r\n \t
Succinct, clear answers are much more impressive than umm-laden mini-talks. Keep your answers brief and relevant.
\r\n \t
Remember, you're the expert: 95 per cent of the audience knows less about the topic than you, so although you feel nervous, you still know more than the people that you are talking to.
\r\n
\r\n """ "format" => "full_html" ] ] "field_image" => [] "field_image_position" => [] "field_limit_text_width" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "0" ] ] "field_link" => [] "field_original" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "0" ] ] "field_palette" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "palette-default" ] ] "field_section_description" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "Body text" ] ] "field_show_to" => [] "field_title" => [] ] "bundle" => "wysiwyg" ] ] "field_member_only" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "0" ] ] "field_metatag" => [] "field_published_by" => [] "field_related" => array:2 [ 0 => array:3 [ "target_id" => "52584" "entity" => array:51 [ "nid" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "52584" ] ] "uuid" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "63b4ec4c-f556-4936-9212-eef1df7e1311" ] ] "vid" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "52584" ] ] "langcode" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "en" ] ] "type" => array:1 [ 0 => array:3 [ "target_id" => "blog" "entity" => array:12 [ …12] "bundle" => "node_type" ] ] "revision_timestamp" => array:1 [ 0 => array:1 [ "value" => "1712220922" ] ] "revision_uid" => array:1 [ 0 => array:3 [ "target_id" => "0" "message" => "Recursion detected." It is dedicated to improving the lives of older people by building the profile, quality and activity of UK ageing research by engaging with funders, Age UK, older people and other active and potentially active researchers.\n \n Clinical research needs to become a mainstay in the public eye. This year the NIHR Clinical Research Network conducted a mystery shopper campaign to investigate how well NHS sites promoted research. The campaign revealed that 91% of sites visited had no research information available in public notice areas and 46% were unable to adequately give or direct the mystery shopper to further information. The Mystery Shopper Report is available on the NIHR Clinical Research Network’s website.\n \n In a separate consumer poll, less than 20% of patients and the public would feel confident about approaching their doctor about participating in research. So, much more could be done to engage with patients and the public about research and empower them to take the initiative in finding out about opportunities for getting involved.\n \n Increasing the number of older adults in research is the goal of the Age and Ageing Specialty Group. This involves supporting UK age-related studies on the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio to recruit effectively. 19,500 older adults were recruited to age-related studies in 2013, an astonishing 75% increase from 2012. Older people are disadvantaged when it comes to participating in relevant clinical research as they are often excluded from studies, unjustifiably, on the basis of their age. This despite the fact that older people are now the “core business” of the NHS. To tackle this unacceptable situation, the Age and Ageing Specialty Group issued a joint statement with NIHR Clinical Research Network on the need for equity in research, including the need to end the widespread use of arbitrary upper age cut-offs in many study protocols.\n \n Often researchers are simply unaware how to effectively recruit older people. The group has therefore published a widely cited (including a feature piece in the BMJ) guide on how to recruit older people into clinical research, Improving Recruitment of Older People to Research through Good Practice.\n \n The group has also very successfully lobbied NHS Research Ethics Committees across the UK to encourage them to reject applications proposing the use of arbitrary upper age limits without adequate justification. Another recent initiative has been to incorporate a standard statement into outpatient letters about the possibility of participating in research, across the various NHS trusts.\n \n Older people themselves can play a massive part in the effort to promote research and get more people involved. For example, the Age and Ageing Specialty Group has a very charming and enlightening video of a 78 year old gentleman discussing his experience of taking part in research.\n \n http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPEi0G0Ka8Y\n \n The NIHR Clinical Research Network is currently running a similar campaign to collect people’s own stories about how research has changed their lives, which will then be turned into a series of audio and video shorts in order to raise awareness of the impact of clinical research. For further information about the campaign click here.\n \n If you would like to find out more about the Age and Ageing Specialty Group there are several ways to do so. During the last decade it has contributed significantly to the health and wealth of the nation and is now the most comprehensive research system in the world. The Ageing Speciality Research Group is part of the Comprehensive Research Network funded by NIHR and has a remit to increase participation in research into ageing within the NHS. This means encouraging more clinical staff and older people to take part in more studies. The Ageing Speciality Group has representatives from each of the fifteen local research networks in England and from the networks in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as lay members to help provide the perspectives of service users and the general public. The local representatives come from a range of disciplines and are working hard to increase participation in research within their region.
\r\n \r\n
Taking part in NIHR research can range from simply being aware of local studies and helping identify potential participants in clinics or on the wards to a member of the research team, to leading the collection of data and running of a study in your hospital or clinical area of practice as one centre in a multi-centre study, all the way to working with colleagues to write a grant proposal and lead a study.
\r\n \r\n
However, we need more studies! This is where you come in…
\r\n \r\n
The NIHR regularly puts out requests for research bids in particular areas – ‘themed calls ‘- and currently there are two that are highly relevant to older people. These calls are for ‘applied research in dementia’ and ‘multi-morbidity in older people’ defined as the co-occurrence of two or more chronic conditions in one person). In partnership with the British Geriatrics Society and Age UK we aim to generate applications to both of these calls by establishing writing groups. We invite readers who are interested in research to join us at our first meeting on 6th July at the Age UK headquarters in Tavistock Square, London from 2-5pm. Both experienced and novice researchers will be equally welcome. We will facilitate the development and exchange of ideas and the groups will work to develop applications generating new multi-disciplinary collaborations. Subsequent meetings can be via teleconference and email as well as face-face so that travel times do not create a barrier to participation.
\r\n \r\n
The programmes responding to these themed calls include
\r\n \r\n
Research for Patient Benefit: funds studies with patient benefit within 5 years, its main purpose is to realise, through evidence, the huge potential for improving, expanding and strengthening the way that healthcare is delivered for patients, the public and the NHS.
\r\n \r\n
Invention for Innovation (i4i): a translational funding scheme to advance healthcare technologies and interventions for increased patient benefit in areas of existing or emerging clinical need.
\r\n \r\n
Programme Grants for Applied Research: aims to produce independent research findings that will have practical application for the benefit of patients and the NHS in the relatively near future. Programme Development Grants are a complementary scheme to allow investigators to undertake preparatory research that will position them to submit a competitive Programme Grant application.
\r\n \r\n
Public Health Research: funds research that evaluates public health interventions, providing new knowledge on the benefits, costs, acceptability and wider impacts of non-NHS interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health. The scope is multidisciplinary and broad, covering a range of public health interventions.
\r\n \r\n
Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation: bridges the gap between preclinical studies and evidence of clinical efficacy. The aim is to secure the progress of new technologies and interventions through their early clinical trials and onto larger, later clinical trials.
\r\n \r\n
Health Service and Delivery Research: funds research to produce rigorous and relevant evidence on the quality, accessibility and organisation of health services, including costs and outcomes. This includes evaluations of how the NHS might improve delivery of services.
\r\n \r\n
Health Technology Assessment: funds and delivers research information about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests for those who plan, provide and receive care in the NHS. The term 'health technology' covers a range of methods used to promote health, prevent and treat disease and improve rehabilitation and long term care including drugs, devices, procedures, settings of care and screening.
\r\n \r\n
How to get involved: Anyone who would like to get involved with these writing groups and research development can contact myself on hcr@soton.ac.uk for more details. Further information on the Ageing Speciality Group is available on the website www.crn.nihr.ac.uk/ageing including the contact details of the local Ageing Speciality Research Group representatives.
\r\n """ "summary" => "" "format" => "full_html" ] ] "field_category" => array:2 [ 0 => array:3 [ "target_id" => "6989" "entity" => array:22 [ …22] "bundle" => "category" ] 1 => array:3 [ "target_id" => "6992" "message" => "Recursion detected."
