Region officer roles and volunteer opportunities

Would you like a chance to promote local talent and research, facilitate networking within the region, and influence decisions taken at a regional level in relation to the specialty?

Region officer roles provide a great opportunity for BGS members to help create a supportive and collaborative local environment for fellow healthcare professionals specialising in the care of older people.

The BGS welcomes expressions of interest from all healthcare professionals working with older people, including nurses and allied health professionals, at any stage of their career. These roles will provide a notable addition to any portfolio, but would be especially beneficial for a BGS member at the beginning of their career.

We are looking for regional representatives amongst those early in their training careers (Foundation Year, CMT and others) in the following regions. If you'd like more details see  and to express interest email trainees@bgs.org.uk

Region Co-Chair (x2)

Length of term: 2 years

The Co- Chair role provides a great opportunity for a BGS member to help to create a supportive and collaborative local environment for fellow healthcare professionals specialising in the care of older people.

Woking jointly with another Co-Chair, your duties include:

  • Contribute, learn and share best practice at the England Council meeting (quarterly)
     
  • Programme development for region meetings i.e., confirming programme topics and speakers, ensuring all events meet the needs of a multidisciplinary audience
     
  • Help to promote meeting dates to external audiences to generate good attendance
     
  • Contribute to the quarterly all regional e-bulletin: Highlighting what’s happening in your region
     
  • Develop peer-support and learning opportunities for BGS members in the region
     
  • Encourage support from trainee representatives and their development  
     
  • Highlight opportunities to grow local networks of BGS members, including recruiting new members

Region NAHP Rep

Length of term: 2 years

This is an opportunity for a nurse or AHP member of the Society, who is also a member of the BGS Nurses and AHPs Council, to play an active role in their region. Duties include:

  • Raise awareness of issues that affect nurses and AHPs on a regional and national level
     
  • Promotion of the specialty and BGS membership
     
  • Feedback on current region issues (via England Council NAHP representative) 

Region Trainees Rep

Length of term: 2 years

As a trainees representative you will need to be SpR/STR grade member of the Society, who is also a member of the BGS Trainee’s Council.
Duties will include:

  • Support training and improve opportunities for education 
     
  • Represent the Trainees’ Council at England Council meetings
     
  • Raise issues that affect the trainees on a regional and national level

Region Committee Member

Length of term: 6 months - 3 years (flexible)

The key role of the Committee member(s) is to support the region chair and secretary with administrative tasks and meeting organisation. Duties include:

  • Main point of contact for the Society’s head office in relation to the management of BGS region events
     
  • Assist the BGS events team with the planning and promotion of region meetings
     
  • Encouraging the promotion of local research and quality improvement initiatives by publicising calls for abstracts
  • Maintaining and updating the region’s webpage on the BGS website
  • Preparing content for the region's e-bulletin
