A new approach to inpatient falls
Dr Sarah Howie - Consultant Geriatrician, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Abstract
The National Audit of Inpatient Falls is part of the Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit program run by the Royal College of Physicians. It is a continuous clinical audit which examines the falls prevention and post-falls management of patients who fall and fracture their neck of femur whilst an inpatient. Its aim is to provide us, as care providers, with tangible outcome measures that can be used to inform our quality improvement activities targeting inpatient falls. This talk will introduce the audit and highlight the potential opportunities for quality improvement from the most recent report.
Biography
After a few years of pursuing other interests, I trained at University of Wales College of Medicine as a graduate from 1998-2003. My junior doctor days were spent mainly in an array of South London hospitals and after 2 children and less than full time training for many years, dual- accredited in general internal medicine and geriatric medicine in 2016. During this time I completed an MSc in gerontology at Kings College London, undertaking, and subsequently publishing, qualitative research examining the role of the geriatrician in the management of the surgical patient from the perspective of geriatricians and surgeons. I am currently working as a consultant at St George’s hospital, with my primary interest being in orthogeriatrics and perioperative medicine. I am currently on the advisory committee for the National Audit of Inpatient Falls at the Royal College of Physicians and am keen to promote the opportunities for MDT quality improvement in the management of inpatient falls.
